The Peabody 1867 rifle, engineered by American inventor Henry O. Peabody and produced by the Providence Tool Company, is a single-shot falling-block breechloader that offered a dramatic rate-of-fire upgrade over Civil War–era muzzle-loaders. Chambered in powerful cartridges such as .50-60 rimfire for the Canadian Militia and 11 × 58 mm R for European contracts, the Peabody’s robust tilting breechblock and under-lever earned praise for strength, simplicity, and battlefield reliability—qualities that later inspired the famous Martini system. Adopted in 1867 by Canada, Romania, Spain, and several South American nations, the rifle saw frontier, colonial, and reserve service well into the 1880s.
