Description
The Lefaucheux pinfire shotgun was an early breech-loading sporting arm developed in the 1830s by French gunsmith Casimir Lefaucheux, built around his revolutionary pinfire cartridge system—one of the first practical self-contained ammunition designs. Patented in 1833 and refined by 1835, these shotguns introduced a break-action breech-loading mechanism that allowed for faster, safer, and more convenient loading compared to traditional muzzleloaders. Widely produced across France and Belgium throughout the mid-19th century, Lefaucheux-style pinfire shotguns became popular sporting arms and helped drive the broader transition toward cartridge-based firearms. Although eventually superseded by centerfire systems, the pinfire design remained in use for decades and played a critical role in the evolution of modern shotgun technology. Today, Lefaucheux pinfire shotguns are highly collectible antique firearms, valued for their historical significance, mechanical innovation, and status as one of the earliest successful cartridge-firing shotgun designs.
Made in the LeFaucheux style, but no maker's markings. Appears to be 12 gauge pinfire by all measurements. Belgian proofed, highly engraved throughout. Some color case hardening remaining on forearm, lock plates, and buttplate. Nice English style straight stock, no cracks or splits. Browned twist barrels, tightly on face and tight ribs. Bores are corroded but could clean up decently. A very interesting and seldom seen piece of firearms history! Antique, proof of age required for shipping.
